Tough at the top

Best Practice, 15 Aug 2008

Things have calmed down a tad in the Accountancy Age office after the manic process that is the annual Top 50 survey of firms, but the performance of the entrants, particularly those outside the top tier, still has the old noggin turning over

From the top 25 down, including the ‘ones to watch’ in 51st to 75th place, there is a huge variance in performance. From double-digit growth of up to 50% to, in some cases, reverse gear. Never has a tough economic environment sorted out the wheat from the chaff quite so clearly.

No doubt every firm has its story to tell – from acquiring a lucrative office to losing a key member of staff. That’s why we will continue to bang on about using your firms’ skillsets to provide an even broader range of services to clients – they need you more than ever – while also sorting out your back office. So make sure your credit control is managed effectively and you have an idea of what will happen to your business when old Smithy retires in a couple of years. And should you take on that specialist insolvency practice in the next town? Or can you manage refinancing and restructuring for your clients with your current workforce?
