OPPOSITION to the motion that tax avoidance is an unacceptable exploitation of the tax system has taken a ten-point lead in Accountancy Age's inaugural online debate.
BDO tax partner Stephen Herring leads Tax Justice Network founder Richard Murphy with 55% of the vote following the second day of discussion.
The second day saw the introduction of a guest voice in the debate, provided by Pinsent Masons partner Ray McCann.
McCann observed "a taxpayer must be taxed only on the basis of clear law" and "a taxpayer does not need to stand still and allow HMRC to take the largest amount possible out of his pocket", before going on to analyse arguments advanced by Herring and Murphy.
Tomorrow sees Herring and Murphy return to make rebuttals against each other's arguments, before Thursday's closing statements.
