US oversight board gets temporary head

The US Securities and Exchange Commission has announced that Charles Niemeier is to act as the chairman for the recently established accountancy oversight board following the resignation of William Webster last year.

Niemeier was previously the chief accountant at the SEC's enforcement division and a co-chairman of the financial fraud task force before his appointment to the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board.

The accountancy oversight board was established under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act to oversee the audits of public company's financial statements. Niemeier will serve as chairman until the SEC votes to appoint a permanent head of the group.
