An ACCA spokesman dismissed rumours that candidates had withdrawn over uncertainty about the continuing role of current chief executive Anthea Rose.
'The recruitment process is ongoing and we are actively involved. When the right person is in place, we will move quite quickly,' he said.
The ICAEW's new chief executive Eric Anstee will start in September.
Anstee is the managing partner of accountancy firm Anstee Associates, and former chief executive officer of insurer Old Mutual.
When it emerged that recruitment specialist Whitehead Mann was working to find CEOs for both institutes, Anthea Rose wrote to the headhunter to demand assurances that there would be no conflict of interest.
