The £14.09bn collected represents 96.4% of the £14.62bn collectable and represents an increase of 0.3% over last year.
Local government minister, Nick Raynsford, said the increase had been achieved through successful partnerships with the Local Government Association.
'It is important councils keep up their good work,' he said. 'The money collected for council tax is spent on essential public services and unpaid taxes create a burden for those residents who do pay.'
