In order to remove the stigma and legal risks associated with whistleblowing, the bill will 'provide statutory immunity from breach of confidence claims for individuals volunteering information in specified circumstances'.
It will be a major boost to the likes of Marta Andreasen, the chief accountant at the European Commission, currently suspended on full pay for blowing the whistle on the financial practices at the EC, after she refused to sign off the commission's accounts.
Next week, another famous whisteblower, Sherron Watkins, who brought the Enron scandal into the public domain, will address a fraud conference in London.
