Computer Associates International, the troubled software company, has appointed Jeff Clarke as its new CFO.

Clarke, who as CFO of Compaq oversaw its merger with Hewlett-Packard, spoke of his commitment to bring federal investigations into the company to an end.

The company has been rocked by a scandal over accounting irregularities from several years ago. Clarke's predecessor, Ira Zar, resigned last year as the company faced dual probes from the SEC and Justice Department.

Clarke said he would work to improve Computer Associate's financial reporting, which he suggested had already come a long way.
