Ice-cream CFO gets jail time

AccountancyAge.com, Accountancy Age, 20 Apr 2006

No sweet ending for former Ben & Jerry's finance chief

The former chief financial officer of Ben & Jerry's Homemade, the well-known ice-cream company, has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for embezzling nearly $300,000 (£167,000) from the company to pay for vacations, car repairs and clothing.

Stuart ‘Mickey’ Wiles issued company checks for charitable contributions, unspecified legal settlements and other nonexistent expenses to pay off personal expenses, the US Attorney's Office in Vermont said.

He served as CFO from May 2000 to May 2004 and would cash the fraudulent checks to pay for electronics, gifts and entertainment expenses.

Wiles also used embezzled money to pay for an addition to his home, the statement said.
