79% of accountants say that age discrimination is widespread in the industry, and 74% believe accountants miss out on promotion because of it, according to a new survey by CareersinAudit.com.
The survey suggests that the profession believes other prejudices play a key part in promotiion decisions too.
74% said gender played a part, 68% said disabilit,y and 68% that social background was significant.
More than one-third of respondents believe they have personally missed out on a promotion because of their age; and more than a quarter, because of their gender. Another 22% said their general appearance had determined whether they were promoted or not.
Nine out of 10 accountants surveyed believed firms should have tighter policies to prevent discrimination.
