EXTRAORDINARY ITEMS - Introducing a new kind of tax holiday.

Financial Director, 04 Nov 1999

A web-crawling colleague spotted this gem on the News of the Weird site at www.newsoftheweird.com. Apparently, Ukrainian prime minister Valery Pustovoitenko began a crackdown on tax delinquents to collect the $3.5bn the government is owed. The top 1,500 non-payers were called to a military base near Kiev, to spend time living in tents and listening to lectures on civil defence preparedness for natural disasters until, out of sheer boredom, they decided to pay up. We believe that the Inland Revenue is considering a similar event, a five-day seminar that is provisionally entitled 101 Fun Things to do with Close Company Legislation.
