We're grateful to London's Evening Standard columnist AN Wilson for his observations on the rumour that HM Treasury is considering dropping the royal reference and calling itself simply "The Treasury".
Wilson pulled out an old anecdote about Malcolm Muggeridge's father, a one-time socialist MP many decades ago, who said in a speech: "Now, ladies and gentlemen, can you tell me this? It's His Majesty's Government, His Majesty's Navy, His Majesty's Stationery office ... But it's the National Debt. Why isn't it His Majesty's?"
