Sports Direct names interim CFO after 18-month hiatus

Group FC Matt Pearson steps up to interim CFO role at Sports Direct

AN ACTING CFO has finally been appointed at Mike Ashley-founded Sports Direct, nearly 18 months after the role was left vacant.

Matt Pearson, who joined the retailer in 2007 from EY and has most recently served as group financial controller, has taken the role on an interim basis.

Investors have expressed concerns about the lack of a senior finance chief on the board, according to reports.

Long-serving FD Bob Mellors stepped down from the role in 2013.

Keith Hellawell, chairman of Sports Direct, said: “After a thorough process and following soundings from leading institutions I am delighted that Matt has been appointed acting chief financial officer and is to join the board. Matt is already leading our group finance team and is now perfectly placed to take on the additional responsibilities of this role on an interim basis.”
