Christmas figures at sixes and sevens

Yet again the ASB has ignored a vital reporting issue which threatens to distort the UK economy. That is the reporting of Christmas sales figures by the leading retail groups. There is enormous interest in the figures since some stores make as much as a third of their profit in and around the festive period.

But the scope for misunderstanding is huge. First there is the erratic impact of where Christmas falls.

Then there is the issue of comparable periods. Some said figures from Argos this year looked worse than some store chains because they were strict about counting the days used in their sales comparisons, while others used only the same number of weeks. Step forward, Sir David Tweedie.
