A few weeks ago, our Highlands correspondent found himself on Richard Branson’s Virgin Trains 17.35 “service” from Euston to Glasgow – and was perturbed to discover the buffet car ran out of food somewhere round about Lancaster. He grumbled aloud but otherwise just wrote it off as post-privatisation teething troubles.

However, a few days ago our man’s generosity of spirit ran out, as did the sandwiches, when, finding himself on another northbound Virgin express somewhere near Lancaster, another crippling food shortage struck.

Given the bearded one’s plans to set up his own bank, Extraordinary Items suggests particular attention be paid to its supply of ten and twenty pound notes. The Bank of England would not look kindly on one of its own running out of cash somewhere near Lancaster …
