EXTRAORDINARY ITEMS - Whisky drinkers refuse to toast the launch of

Our survey of FDs’ attitudes to and experiences of the single European currency yielded an eye-opening range of views. Not least was what it revealed about FDs’ favourite tipple. The questionnaire we published in the April issue gave readers the choice of a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne or The Macallan single malt whisky – assuming they were successful in our five-bottle prize draw, of course. Champagne was the preferred prize for 64% of FDs; just over a third preferred the whisky option. More curious, however, was that consumers of France’s finest fizzy plonk were more likely to support the single European currency than those who prefer Scotland’s national drink. While champagne-swillers were split almost 50-50 on the euro, whisky drinkers opposed it by a margin of two-to-one. Our five winners will be announced next month! Until then a votre sante to most of you, slainte to the rest.
