Jon Thompson prepares for battle at MoD

Formerly FD of the Department for Children, Schools and Families, Jon
Thompson takes over from Trevor Woolley who has worked at the Ministry of
Defence since 1975. Thompson, who is also head of government finance profession,
has sparked controversy by continuing in this role as well as finance director
of the MoD.

He previously worked as a senior manager at Ernst & Young and has served
as FD at Ofsted. Thompson has a rare condition called synaesthesia, which
enables him to see numbers as colours. For example, he sees numbers on a
spreadsheet in red if they haven’t been calculated properly.

After less than a year in the role, Ann Godbehere has announced her departure
as CFO for nationalised bank Northern Rock. Rock says Godbehere will step down
from the board on 31 January and leave the company at the end of February. She
is reported to have earned £900,000 at the nationalised bank having secured a
contract last February. The bank has begun a search for her replacement.
