Peter Kane appointed as the City of London Corporation's 80th chamberlain

PETER KANE has been appointed as the City of London Corporation’s 80th chamberlain, succeeding Chris Bilsland as the elected body’s director of finance, treasurer and chief financial adviser.

Kane, currently the Home Office finance director, has also served in senior roles in the Cabinet Office, the Treasury and local government.

The elected City of London Corporation looks after the Square Mile business district and provides key services and facilities for London and the UK generally. Its chamberlain is its financial adviser, accountant, receiver and paymaster and is responsible for the investment of its funds. He is also one of its three official trustees.

The role of chamberlain also encompasses important civic and ceremonial responsibilities. These includes admitting persons to the Freedom of the City and being responsible for the liaison, advice and guidance to City livery companies on matters of protocol, procedure, ceremony and governance.

Kane said after his appointment: “I am delighted and honoured to be able to continue serving the public as chamberlain of the City of London Corporation. It is a unique role dating back to 1237 and provides a great opportunity to help London respond to the challenges of the 21st century.”
