Javid and Soubry take business roles in new government

Sajid Javid made secretary of state for business, innovation and skills, while Anna Soubry takes small business brief

CONSERVATIVE RISING STAR Sajid Javid is one of a slew of new faces handed roles in the government’s business and economic positions as David Cameron forms his first all-Tory government.

Former culture secretary Javid (pictured) joined the cabinet as he was made secretary of state for business, innovation and skills in the shake-up. He replaces Liberal Democrat Vince Cable, who lost his Twickenham seat in the election.

He became a politician in 2009, having previously worked in the City at Chase Manhattan Bank and Deutsche Bank. He was financial secretary to the Treasury from 2013/14.

Anna Soubry, too, was handed a business brief, taking on the newly-created role of small business minister in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. She was first elected in 2010, and previously held under-secretary roles in public health and defence. She was more recently minister of state for defence personnel, welfare and veterans.

Soubry is one of ten women brought into the cabinet, with Ros Altmann handed the pensions minister post despite financial secretary to the Treasury David Gauke being heavily linked with the job. It has not yet been confirmed whether Gauke will continue in what is effectively the ‘tax minister’ role.

Other women brought into key roles include energy and climate change secretary Amber Rudd; economic secretary to the Treasury Harriet Baldwin and; minister of state for employment Priti Patel.
