Shapland to leave Ladbrokes' audit role

Darren Shapland to step down as Ladbrokes' audit committee chair

ONE of the UK’s most senior retail finance chiefs is to leave Ladbrokes’ board.

Darren Shapland, Ladbrokes audit committee chairman and former Sainsbury’s CFO, is to leave the betting business after six years.

The move comes as Ladbrokes and Coral look to seal a mega-merger that will create a £2bn firm.

Shapland holds a number of senior non-executive roles, such as chairman of Maplin, Topps Tiles and Notonthehighstreet.com. He served as FD of Superdrug and then Carpetright before joining Sainsbury’s. He went back to Carpetright as CEO, then joined Poundland as chairman.

Peter Erskine, chairman, said: “Darren has made a significant contribution to the business over the past six years. His insights have been hugely valued, and on behalf of the board, I wish him every success in his future endeavours.

“A search for a successor is progressing well with the aim to find a candidate who will go on to be part of the board for the proposed Ladbrokes Coral plc.”

Coral CFO Paul Bowtell is set to take the top finance role if the merger goes ahead. A proposed merger between Betfair and Paddy Power will see Alex Gersh take the top finance role.
