Manchester United scoops Sportech CFO transfer

Cliff Baty to join Manchester United as CFO, after two years with Sportech

MANCHESTER UNITED has pulled off another transfer scoop: recruiting Sportech’s CFO Cliff Baty.

The former finance director of e-gaming at Ladbrokes has served with Sportech – a pool betting and technology supplier – for the past two years. Currently on a 12-month notice term, an agreement between the parties as to Baty’s departure date is being discussed.

“We are very pleased to welcome Cliff to the club,” said Ed Woodward, Manchester United’s executive vice chairman. “He is a proven finance executive who brings a wealth of international business experience, and will be an excellent addition to our senior management team.”

A search for Baty’s replacement at Sportech has begun. Ian Penrose, Sportech CEO, said: “Cliff has been an important part of our management team since May 2013, and during that time, he has built a strong finance function across our international operations. On behalf of the board, I wish him every success.”

Sportech has made the news over several years because of its fight for overpaid VAT in relation to ‘Spot The Ball’ – which, with interest, could recoup £97m for the business. A Court of Appeal hearing is due next week after HMRC’s successful win in the Upper Tribunal in September 2014.
