Rising star Andrew Bonfield,36, continues his ascent becoming chief financial officer at drugs giant SmithKline Beecham. Bonfield will replace current FD Hugh Collum who is retiring at the end of the year. Bonfield is currently second in command at the group’s finance department and in 1991 became the youngest vice-president at SKB. Bonfield moves into a role that earned Collum a basic salary of £378,000 last year.
Malcolm Paget has joined Douglas Llambias Associates as finance director.
Paget joins the recruitment consultants from the FD spot at HIT Entertainment.
In this role he guided the company through its flotation on the London Stock Exchange. He was also an assistant director at the Serious Fraud Office.
Julian Hance, 42, moves into the position of group finance director at Royal & Sun Alliance. He replaces Paul Spencer (see the FD Interview, September 1997) who moves up to become UK chief executive officer following the retirement of Peter Foreman. Hance, an ex-accountant, managed the auditing for Sun Alliance during the 1980’s. He has been at the company since 1987, his most recent position being that of director of corporate and financial strategy. The FD position earned Spencer a basic salary of £250,000 last year, with bonuses and benefits taking this figure up to £390,000.
Simon Dighton has been promoted to finance director at Birkby, a provider of accommodation to small- and medium-sized businesses. Previously finance director designate at the firm, he will be responsible for a 30-strong accountancy and IT team.
Troubled carpet retailer Allied Carpets has announced the resignation of FD David Pout. This comes after the company’s shares were suspended due to accounting irregularities. It has been reported that he will receive £221,000 in compensation. B&Q’s Bruce Wright has been appointed interim FD.
Bundy, part of the TI Group, has appointed Simon Thomas as finance director of Bundy Automotive Europe. Thomas will be responsible for the financial management of the automotive operations across Europe and South Africa.
He joins from Siebe where he was finance director, sales and service division.
Danka Business Systems has appointed Larry Switzer finance director and chief financial officer. He joins the photocopier firm which has issued two profit warnings in the past year, replacing David Snell who retires.
Switzer was vice-president and CFO at US clothing giant Fruit of the Loom.
Stadium, the plastics and electronics group, has appointed Tim Sale as FD. He replaces Nigel Rogers who moves to an operational position within the company. Sale joins from Arriva where he held the position of group financial controller.
NPI, which provides retirement-related financial services, moves Philip Moore into the FD spot replacing Bernard Brindley. Moore joins from PricewaterhouseCoopers where he was MD in the Hong Kong division.
Andy Greensmith becomes CFO at Acorn, the technology design and solutions company. He replaces Stan Boland who is promoted to chief executive officer.
Greensmith joins from the BBC where he was treasurer for corporate and project financing.
