Coombe, 53, joined Glaxo Holdings (now Glaxo Wellcome) as group financial controller in 1986 and was appointed to the board in July 1992. Prior to this he was group treasurer at Charterhouse Group, a position held until 1984 when he became finance manager at Charter Consolidated plc. He is also a member of the Accounting Standards Board.
