Post Office in confusion over tax forms

The Post Office was quick off the mark when our sister publication Accountancy Age sprang the story that the latest money-making wheeze from the not-quite-privatised shop front for the government was to give tax advice.

It makes sense, obviously. Post Offices spend most of their time getting people to fill in forms and send them off to some government office or other. Why not add tax forms to applications, for driving licences, car tax , TV licences and the rest?

The Post Office press office was quick to rubbish the story. “We are confused and nonplussed”, a spokesman admitted. That’s how everyone else feels about filling in tax forms, so they have obviously been in training.
