Cable weighs in to charity tax row

The business secretary has criticised the government's plans to cap charitable donations

VINCE CABLE has added his voice to the growing criticism of the government’s plans to introduce a cap on charitable giving.

Cable said that while he saw the importance of preventing tax avoidance, a balance needed to be struck between clamping down and “encouraging” charitable donation.

He also said he was “sympathetic” with universities’ concerns that funding for research and scholarships could be hit.

A spokesman for the business secretary said that Cable – who also administers higher education – was discussing the potential impact with the universities.
